  • 7-22 August 2010:  BEST BIRDS  include Black-and-chestnut Eagle (adult, flying low overhead at the  Field Station),  Collared Forest-Falcon (2 Mindo Sector), Sickle-winged Guans (at banana feeders),  Spot-fronted Swift, 15 species of hummingbird, Crested Quetzal (pair at guest house),  Powerful Woodpecker (pair),   Moustached Antpitta and Yellow-breasted Antpitta  (observed along Guarumos and Oso Verde Trails), Chestnut-crowned Antpitta ( h field station),  Beautiful Jay ( 1 at Puma Trail), Club-winged Manakin  (juv male at Guest House), Tyrannine Woodcreeper (banded 11 August 2006).  Best Mammals:  Numerous Kinkajous seen along Santa Rosa River Trail.

  • 15-31 July 2010:  BEST BIRDS include  White-throated Hawk at the banana feeders, black morph Collared Forest-Falcon (at the guest house), Sickle-winged Guan (at the banana feeders), Blue-fronted Parrotlet,  Rufescent Screech-Owl (at the guest house), Spot-fronted Swift,  Crested Quetzal (at the guest house), Rusty-winged Barbtail, Tawny-throated Leaftosser, Rufous-breasted Antthrush,  Giant Antpitta (observed on Sisters Loop Trail), Moustached Antpitta (observed and photographed on Guarumos Trail), Yellow-breasted Antpitta (observed on Sisters Loop Trail), Chestnut-crowned Antpitta (heard along Ridge Trail), Rufous-crowned Tody-Flycatcher (at the banana feeders), Scaled Fruiteater (at the guest house), Beautiful Jay (at the guest house),  Western Hemispingus (near the banana feeders), Plushcap (along the road) plus 16 species of hummingbird at the feeders.

  • 24 June 2010Nest with nestling of Hoary Puffleg found on Canyon´s Trail.
  • Week of 14-20 March 2010:  BEST MAMMAL: Spectacled Bear observed on Guan Gulch Trail at Lucy´s Creek behind the guest house on 15 March at 10.15am!!   Best birds included Rufescent Screech-Owl (heard), Moustached Antpitta adult feeding nestlings in the nest plus a second adult observed in a different territory (observed), Yellow-breasted and Chestnut-crowned Antpitta (heard), Tyrannine Woodcreeper (heard), White-faced Nunbird (heard), Scaled Fruiteater (observed), Beautiful Jay (observed), Black-chinned Mountain-Tanager (observed).

  • Week of 14-20 February 2010:  Best birds observed and reported include Plumbeous Hawk along road, Rufescent Screech-Owl behind Guest House, Spot-fronted Swifts, White-faced Nunbird photographed along Nunbird Ridge Trail, Yellow-breasted Antpitta along Sr. Tim´s Trail, Moustached Antpitta photographed nest, two eggs and adult on nest, Giant Antpitta calling, Tyrannine Woodcreeper, Beautiful Jay (3 observed), Toucan Barbet daily, Plate-billed Mountain-Toucan daily, Powerful Woodpecker daily.

  • Week of 8-15 January 2010:  2 Hoary Pufflegs at Guest House feeders,  Green-fronted Lancebill near banana feeders, Spot-fronted Swifts seen daily, Rufescent (Colombian) Screech-Owl seen and photographed on two separate nights,  Olivaceous Piha, 5 Beautiful Jays, Yellow-breasted Antpitta, 2 Moustached Antpitta observed on Canyons Trail and Sr. Tim´s Trail, plus many fledgling birds.

  • Week of 19 October 2008 – Spot-fronted Swifts, Orange-breasted Fruiteater, Scaled Fruiteater, Green-and-Black Fruiteater (pair on nest), Olivaceous Piha, Uniform Treehunter, fledgling Plate-billed Mountain-Toucan, Rufous-breasted Antthrush, Crested Quetzal, Black-capped Tyrannulet (altitudinal record) observed at Reserva Las Gralarias.

 

  • 2- 5 August 2008 – Pair of Orange-breasted Fruiteater, pair of Scaled Fruiteater, Yellow-breasted Antpitta, Olivaceous Piha, Rufous-crowned Pygmy-Tyrant observed near Puma Trail, Reserva Las Gralarias. Also, 1 young of Crimson-mantled Woodpecker observed fledging.
  • 30 June 2008 – Moustached Antpitta and Orange-breasted Fruiteater observed along Entry Trail, RLG
  • 2-8 June 2008 - Dark-backed Wood-Quail, Yellow-breasted Antpitta, male Orange-breasted Fruiteater at RLG, nesting Black-and-chestnut Eagle, MBT Cloud Forest Tour
  • 10 May 2008 – Cloud-Forest Pygmy-Owl singing, photographed, and a vocal Olivaceous Piha observed along Parrot Hill Trail, Reserva Las Gralarias.

  • Week of 11 June 2007 – Black Solitaire, Scaled Fruiteater, Orange-breasted Fruiteater, Green-and-black Fruiteater, Olivaceous Piha, White-faced Nunbird, Uniforme Treehunter, Beautiful Jay, more - observed at Reserva Las Gralarias.
  • 1 April 2007 - Plumbeous Forest-Falcon – one individual observed well as it preened, Puma Trail, Reserva Las Gralarias. Also pair of Scaled Fruiteater and 4 Powerful Woodpecker.

 

  • 16 December 2006- Christmas Bird Count at Reserva Las Gralarias, with 8 volunteers working in 3 teams, a cumulative effort of 25 hours and 9.9 kilometers of trails hiked. Results were 124 species recorded, including 14 species of hummingbirds, 11 species of ovenbirds, 18 species of flycatchers and 19 species of tanagers!!! Other highlights were 3 Orange-breasted Fruiteater seen on Parrot Hill Trail, including a stunning male, plus 2 more heard on the Lower Trail, 4 Scaled Fruiteater, 1 immature Black-and-chestnut Eagle flying at eye level over Nunbird Ridge Trail, plus a new species for the reserve found by Alaska native Lureta Whitewing – an Olive-sided Flycatcher.
  • 11-17 November 2006 – White-throated Quail-Dove, Dark-backed Wood-Quail, Double-toothed Kite, Hook-billed Kite, Mottled Owl, Powerful Woodpecker, White-faced Nunbird, Beautiful Jay, Yellow-breasted Antpitta, Moustached Antpitta, Orange-breasted Fruiteater, Scaled Fruiteater, Green-and-black Fruiteater, Tyrannine Woodcreeper, Plushcap, at Reserva Las Gralarias.
  • 22-24 October 2006 – Oilbird, White-faced Nunbird, Rufous-breasted Antthrush, Green-and-black Fruiteater, Orange-breasted Fruiteater, Scaled Fruiteater, Club-winged Manakin observed at Reserva Las Gralarias.
  • 19 October 2006 – 2 adult Dark-backed Wood-Quail with 3 chicks observed on Puma Trail, Reserva Las Gralarias.
  • 16 October 2006 – Fledgling Plate-billed Mountain-Toucan with adult seen on Waterfall Trail, Reserva Las Gralarias.
  • 7 October 2006 -FOS northern migrant Blackburnian Warbler, female, seen at the guest house, Reserva Las Gralarias.
  • 14 September 2006 – FOS northern migrant Western Wood-Pewee, calling, seen along Nunbird Ridge Trail at the guest house, Reserva Las Gralarias.
  • 11 September 2006 - Moustached Antpitta, Crested Quetzal, Tyrannine Woodcreeper, Beautiful Jay, behind Las Gralarias Guest House.
  • 8 September 2006 - Black-breasted Puffleg, female, on Nunbird Ridge Trail; nesting Plate-billed Mountain-Toucans on Waterfall Trail.
  • 3 September 2006 – Cloud-forest Pygmy-Owl and Scaled Fruiteater at Reserva Las Gralarias, on Santa Rosa River Trail.
  • 2 September 2006 – Fledgling Crested Quetzal plus adults on Parrot Hill Loop, Reserva Las Gralarias.
  • 30 August 2006 – 2 White-faced Nunbird on Sisters’ Loop Trail.
  • 7 August 2006 - White-nosed Coati seen on Sr. Tim’s Trail at Reserva Las Gralarias.
  • 2-3 August 2006 – Cloud-forest Pygmy-Owl (h), Lyre-tailed Nightjar (2h), Rufescent Screech-Owl (h), Crested Quetzal, Giant Antpitta, Moustached Antpitta (h), Yellow-breasted Antpitta (h), Orange-breasted Fruiteater (male and female), nesting Plate-billed Mountain-Toucan, family of Mountain Coati, at Reserva Las Gralarias.
